EIGHT

Mama covered her mouth now when Daddy was at home. As though to keep from saying something she might regret. And when he was gone the hand came off. And when she wasn’t watching her favorite soap opera, she talked to herself. Talked and talked all day.

One day she said, “I want just ten good years. Just ten.”

She was thinking of life like a race. And since Daddy was ten years older he should finish first. Leaving Mama to do whatever she wanted. “It seems only fair, doesn’t it? Doesn’t it?” she wanted to know.

Ten years to do whatever she wanted.

But what did she want to do?

“Mama, what do you want to do?”

“Well, I don’t know.”

“Don’t know?”

“I haven’t completely thought it out.” She scrubbed the counter.

Like I told you, she was always scrubbing something. A thing can only get so damn clean.

“First off, I’d get me one of them gazebos.”

“I know you want a gazebo, Mama. But what do you want to do. Really want to do?”

“Besides the gazebo?”

She’d seen a gazebo on her soap opera, and people with names like Nina and Cliff were always meeting there to fight and to love. Ah, but mostly to love. Mostly to love.

I tried to see the woman that’d felled trees, could build houses.

“It don’t matter. I’ll never get them ten years,” she said. “He’ll never die. He’ll be here even when all the roaches are gone.”

Silence. Scrubbing.

Asking herself the questions that scare human beings the most.

What did I lose?

How did it feel?
